Arjen Robben returned to Munich from international duty with the Netherlands carrying an injury, but was given the all-clear on Wednesday by FCB chief medical officer Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt. The winger broke down in the warm-up prior to his national team’s meeting with Hungary in Budapest, but the problem is restricted to a minor groin strain, caused by bruising to the lower spine.
Robben will not be out of action for long and is expected to be fit for squad training on Thursday. It is not yet known whether he is a contender for Saturday’s Bundesliga meeting with Mainz.
Earlier today Mario Gomez successfully underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his left ankle.
Doc Müller-Wohlfahrt says that Gomez will have to wait three weeks until he can practice again. He’ll then probably need another week or two to regain complete fitness, meaning you should expect him to return in early/mid September, just in time for the first Champions League group match.
Mario Gomez: “I am happy that the surgery went well, that the pain is gone. Now I have to be patient for a bit, then I’ll work very hard to be fit enough to play as soon as possible.”
Still no official word from FCB. This is much better than the 3 month estimate from yesterday, but still depressing. Gute Besserung Mario!
