In honor of Bastian Schweinsteiger’s birthday, we thought it only suitable that today’s Goal Monday be about him. We’re still keeping it a little old school and rewinding back to the 2006/2007 Champion’s League campaign.

October 18th 2006, Bayern was in group stages and set to play their first leg away against Sporting CP. Hopes were set high for a win, as Bayern had come away with six points from their previous two group stage games. They didn’t disappoint.

In the 19th minute, from 30 yards out, Bastian fired in a right footed goal that would ultimately win the match. He was also sent off in the 46th minute, but… you win some you lose some. And win they did!

Bayern finished first in their group with 12 points and went on to beat Real Madrid in the first knock-out round before being defeated by AC Milan in the quarterfinals.
